Overview
Good hygiene and regular gum treatment are generally effective in controlling the disease, but the damage caused is often difficult or impossible to reverse.

There are several factors that increase risk including:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Smoking
- Crowding of teeth
- Diabetes (and other medical conditions)
- Hormonal changes (pregnancy & menopause)
- Particular Medications
Depending on the stage of the disease will depend on if it is reversible.
Gingivitis - this stage is reversible with professional cleaning and consistent oral health care. At this stage there is no bone loss and it is reversible.
Periodontitis - at this stage the infection destroys the supporting bone and tissue. Without treatment the lost bone does not naturally regenerate.
Active gum disease must be controlled before implant treatment.
Placing implants in an infected environment significantly increases the risk of failure.
Advanced bone loss from gum disease may require techniques such as zygomatic implants or bone grafting to achieve a stable implant outcome.
