Biomechanical Wear and Tear

Quick Answer

Biomechanical wear and tear refers to the physical stress placed on implants, screws and prosthetic teeth over time through everyday biting and chewing forces. While All-On-4 Plus® restorations are designed for long-term durability, components can still experience normal wear and may occasionally require maintenance, adjustment or replacement.

Overview

All-On-4 Plus® restorations are created to handle the forces involved in speaking, chewing and everyday function.
However, like any long-term dental restoration, the prosthetic teeth and supporting components are exposed to ongoing mechanical stress.

Biomechanical wear and tear can affect different parts of the restoration, including the prosthesis (bridge), screws, titanium frameworks and implant components. In some cases this may lead to wear, small fractures, chipping, loosening of screws or gradual changes to the bite.

Several factors can influence how much stress is placed on the restoration. These may include teeth grinding, clenching, chewing very hard foods, bite force, general oral habits and long-term daily function.

Regular maintenance appointments are an important part of monitoring the condition of the bridge and implant components over time. During these visits, clinicians may assess bite balance, check for signs of wear, tighten components if required and identify small problems before they become more significant.

The materials used in All-On-4 Plus® restorations are selected for strength and durability, but long-term maintenance is still considered a normal part of caring for implant-supported teeth.
