Overview
Post-operative recovery is an important part of All-On-4 Plus® treatment. After surgery, the gums, bone and surrounding tissues need time to heal, while the implants heal and integrate with the jawbone.
The early recovery phase may involve swelling, bruising, tenderness or mild bleeding. These symptoms are common after surgery and usually begin to settle as healing progresses ( 1- 2 weeks after surgery). Your clinician will provide specific instructions on rest, medication, cleaning and when to resume normal activity.
Diet is also an important part of recovery. Most patients are advised to follow a modified soft-food diet while the implants integrate with the jawbone. This helps reduce pressure on the implants and new teeth during the early healing phase.
Every recovery is different. Age, systemic health, smoking status and the complexity of the procedure can all affect healing. Your All-On-4 Plus® clinician will guide you through the recovery process based on your individual treatment plan. Everyones body reacts differently to anaesthetic and the healing process of having surgery, so don't rush getting back into everyday life straight away. Let your body recover and takes as long as it takes.
Common Questions
What are the common questions regarding post-operative recovery?
The first two weeks after surgery are usually focused on rest, controlling swelling, eating soft foods, gentle cleaning and protecting the surgical area. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common in the first few days and will usually subside within 1-2 weeks.
A modified soft-food diet helps reduce pressure on the implants and new teeth while healing takes place. For the first 4 months you should be eating foods that don't require much chewing such as scrambled eggs, mashed potato, smoothies, steamed vegetables, rice, fish, soft chicken etc.
It is normal to have discomfort in the first week or so after surgery. Swelling, bruising and tenderness can also be expected after surgery and is normal, so don't panic, this is your body's initial healing reaction. Traditional bone grafting can add months to the overall treatment timeline because the grafted bone needs time to heal before implants can be placed. Immediate loading allows suitable patients to receive fixed teeth shortly after implant placement, while healing continues beneath the surface.
